Vernon, CT - Population 28,063 (Yr 2000) Area 18.6 SQ Miles
Vernon, originally part of Bolton, Connecticut, was incorporated as a separate township in October 1808. Believed named for Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia home, Vernon has a long history. Early settlers built mills along the Hockanum and Tankerhoosen rivers. The textile manufacturing mills began here in the early 1800s. The industry declined after World War II and the last big mill, the Roosevelt Mills closed in 1988. In 1965, the Town of Vernon consolidated with the City of Rockville and the Vernon Fire District and assumed all assets and liabilities of the two governmental units. Since 1970, the Town has operated under a mayor-town council form of government. The purpose of this website is to portray the beauty of the town of Vernon and to offer information and links to other websites dedicated to this town.
